  •  I could swear we had a shot of it (4+ / 0-)

somewhere... it sure didn't look like it would fit around the BOP... but it's so hard to judge scale with that stuff.

    Thanks, sully.

    •  Right... it definitely wouldn't go over the BOP (2+ / 0-)

It would just slide over the stub of the riser, where the hat currently sits, and then over the flange that connects the stub to the flex joint. It would only go far enough over to find some kind of support for its fairly substantial weight (I think BP said 75 tons).

There's a pic sixth from bottom on this page that describes it as a "flex joint overshot". It's hard to get much sense of scale, though. Also, the description is odd - I suspect it's what led me to assume it was going to seal against the side of the flex joint, but when I expressed that assumption a couple of days ago here, someone quite correctly pointed out that wouldn't really be possible.

Also on that page, the bottom pic's very interesting. "Flange splitter" - definitely suggests they're trying for the bolt-on cap.

      •  Thank you, sully -- sorry I got to this so (2+ / 0-)

        late.

The bolt-on cap makes me feel a whole lot better, after watching all the issues with #4.

        Excellent explanations, as always.  :)

I remember it was cylindrical and had 10" thick steel walls -- something like that.
