  •  Services are very expensive in the US (0+ / 0-)

Economists assign a higher value to goods than services, probably for the above reasons.

It costs $40 if I was to have someone mow my lawn.

    A lawn mower costs $140.

It is much cheaper for me to mow the lawn myself using a purchased mower.

The fact that I make far less than most service providers also tends for me to purchase tools than to write checks for services.

Taxation of my income and a state services tax also tend to favor do-it-yourself with books and tools over hiring/service purchase.

    •  $40 weekly for about 20 times a year (0+ / 0-)

vs. $140 once every seven years

you value your labor at zero

a mower actually lasts and continues operational seven years--not likely

        your energy source is free

you value your time at zero

        maintenance costs nothing

The Constitution is not a menu for an exclusive diner.
