  •  Ancient Rome seems apt (none)
America is declining in much the same manner as ancient Rome did after Gaius Julius Ceasar crossed the Rubicon and eventually installed himself dictator.  The senate, not willing to cede power (they themselves corrupt and bloated with self-absorption) attempted to quash such an injustice to the Roman people by assasinating Ceasar.  Instead, it led to Augustus coming to power as an absolute despot and installed the "cult" of the Ceasars upon the Roman Republic, which had long been on the path of empire since the time of Sulla and before.

Bush is our Caligula.  The "Crawford Caligula" as one pundit put it.  He is cultish in much the same way as Caligula -- believing in his primacy as a god on earth and having a megalomaniacal personality.

The steady decline of America started with Nixon.  Ford and Carter were anomolous.  Reagan was our J. Ceasar and Augustus all rolled into one, with Bush I picking up the Augustus role in his declining years.  Clinton fills the Tiberius role pretty well -- expanded the empire, but was ineffectual at establishing his greatness due to sexual proclivities that made people think he was a tad off.  But then along came Caligula, and the Roman citizens saw just how bad it could get.  Bush = Caligula to a tee.

Rome survived for centuries after Caligula, but it was never the same.  Corruption and a complete lack of morality eventually led to the complete collapse of the empire -- a bitter omen that should bode ill for modern America unless we collectively consolidate our fecal matter and change our arrogant view of the world as a blank slate for our misguided imposition of self-righteous moral certitude.
