  •  Many of us coastal residents feel like we're (13+ / 0-)

in a state of suspended animation. Jeff Klinkenburg, who writes about Florida for the SPT captured that really well in an article today.

The oil is like a hurricane that never leaves. It waxes and wanes but remains just offshore, waiting and waiting, as if directed by the Prince of Darkness himself. He must enjoy toying with the anxious motel owners, shopkeepers and restaurateurs — who, by the way, are never reduced to serving king crab from Alaska, sea bass from Chile or shrimp from a farm pond.

The article can be found here.

When I read Klinkenburg's piece it reminded me of a new book of essays and poetry by Florida writers protesting oil drilling (as a result of our aberrant legislature). It's called UnspOiled. Kliinkenburg and Diane Roberts are among the authors. There's a review by Bruce Ritchie here.

I'm going to see if I can find it somewhere other than online. I used to not like being a "flatlander," as my ex used to call me. We were both originally from the Smoky Mountains, but my family moved down here when I was in elementary school. Now it's kind of a badge of honor to live here. Sorry for the long comment.

the adrenalin of the most hyper..

it is gonna wear us all down very very much..unless we pay attention to ourselves..

it is one thing to go a week or two..short on food and sleep in an emergency situation..

but month after month..you got to figure out a marathon strategy..

Cindy - Tampa seems to have a hidden shelter locale..few big things get up in there..I remember one tropical storm a couple decades back..but the big things thankfully seem to avoid that spot..I am going to say a little prayer tonight for this season to go the same way...

    •  I've often said the same thing - (5+ / 0-)

that this is like waiting for the storm that never makes land.  You've done all you can individually to prepare, and all that's left to do is keep preparing and wait, miserably, and rant at the unpreparedness of groups who are supposed to exist to protect citizens.
