  •  So I guess it's back to college for the 50+ folks (1+ / 0-)

So I guess all the 50+ folks who are unemployed should go back to college? And then in four or five years they can go up against the 20+ folks who are just coming out of college? There's gotta be a better solution than that.

You're correct that a full four year degree may not make sense for older workers.  But everyone should have enough of a horizon to have a "Plan B" for their career.

I'm convinced that the two certifications I earned while unemployed played a large part in my finding a new job.

There are actual certifications that help people get jobs? What would those be? My husband's unemployed and his field (software QA) has shrunk so dramatically that I think there may be thousands of people chasing down just a few QA jobs in the SF Bay Area. I would love to hear about any kind of practical learning that leads to actual jobs. Certifications sound a lot less complicated than 4-year degrees.

        •  you're exaggerating, but MCTS and CCENT (0+ / 0-)

I have nearly fifteen years of IT experience, but having the certifications allowed me to present that as well-rounded in interviews.

I also took a six-week QA course which led to a job in 2007.  I do not hold any actual QA certs, so I cannot speak to their value.

I know damn well that I am unemployable in the field now, for my age (50), my gender (not male), my lack of a degree, and my absence from the field for the past five years due to disability. And even back then it was hard to find jobs. In no way do you exaggerate.
