I used to tell my grad students that 50% of all principals are insane. Would you agree with that estimate, or is it too low?

Yes, there are evil people IRL. And they tend to be more like Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. That's why they're believable in the story; we've met them. (Or we think we have.)

But Voldy-- he's not like that awful lady you're talking about. He's got the avada kedavra and the horcruxes going on, and so you find yourself asking "Why?"

    Or I did, anyway.

or at least people with evil in them.  Evil Overlords are a bit much though.

I can believe them when I meet them in real life. But in a book, all set up with no motivation or raison d'etre other than evil... that I have trouble with.

    •  Yes, she was a principal by day (4+ / 0-)

at the other school in the consortium and an education director at night where I was.

The first year, I saw her too often and nearly retired.  I actually wrote a farewell letter.  The nice secretary begged me to stay.  I cut back to just the one school where she had no lair and rarely came, and that seemed to help.  The other secretary would call to warn us when she was coming and my secretary would pop a happy pill.

After cutting back, I lasted four more years and made it through excruciating teacher's meetings.  Not sure how.

With Voldemort...the idea that anyone might defy him, might diss him...might do him harm...is unbearable.

      Destroying gives V a thrill...

But I did think he was over the top...so I probably agree with you.

Snape scared me worse than V did.
