I've got "Flogging the Quill" bookmarked now - thanks! - though reading the article has got me a bit worried.  The end of Surly's Intergalactic Moon Pub is finally in sight, but tonight's diary and comments make me wonder if the past 500 pages are never gonna see the light of day because the one on top of the Preface wasn't good enough.

Naivete compels me to mention that I might send it in for a flogging, but I'd be psyched to have you guys tell me it sucks before some stranger does - would you mind terribly if I posted it here, to be pre-flogged?

    •  well, it sounds like something I would like to (4+ / 0-)

buy...I am not sure you should give it away to me for free. :)  I worry about your rights if printed on the net first.

I have sometimes posted a few paragraphs here to be ruthlessly examined.

      Best wishes!!!

of the Preface - cover letters are a bridge I figured I'd cross once I get the novel completed (hopefully mid-late August).  Jumping the gun never seems to work out all that well for me...

You raise some good points - hadn't thought about rights being given up by posting it first here (my one publishing success worked in reverse: it started as a diary series, then got bookified), so maybe I shouldn't.  Be happy to e-mail it to you, though, now or when Surly's is done - anything to make a sale!  ;-)

          before you cover letter!

I certainly wouldn't object to your posting page one here, and hey it's my series so no one else will probably object. But I would advise you to wait and do it next week, and earlier. By this time of night there usually aren't many people reading new comments so you wouldn't get much response.

I don't think you're risking any rights or anything by posting the first page of a novel. It's when you're posting the entire text that you're skating on thin ice as to rights.

is that technically, the rights belong to the owner of the site. If you want to post excerpts for critique or give the entire thing away for free, you're better off posting it to your own web site and linking it to this one.
