  •  I'm not religious, but I remember (4+ / 0-)

something from all those times I got dragged to church as a kid.

I do believe it was Jesus himself who preached that if someone attacks you you should turn the other cheek.

I guess that's gotten morphed into "Who Would Jesus Shoot First?" somehow.

This is exactly why the founders wanted the separation between church & state.

    •  You missed the point of the message (9+ / 0-)

Jesus specified that if someone (presumably right-handed) strikes you on the right cheek, you should turn your left to them.

That doesn't mean "respond to violence with submission", as is often claimed. When a right-hander strikes someone on the right cheek, it's an back-handed slap. If that person turns the left cheek, the assailant can no longer back-hand. He has to slap open-handed or punch.

An back-handed slap is a sign that the slapper considers himself the social superior to the slapped. You back-hand servants and slaves. To punch, or open-handed slap, someone is to declare them an equal.

Jesus is saying, "if someone slaps you, make them punch you. Demand to be treated as an equal." It's a radical message about the social order. It's not about not non-violence.
