    Jesus specified that if someone (presumably right-handed) strikes you on the right cheek, you should turn your left to them.

    That doesn't mean "respond to violence with submission", as is often claimed. When a right-hander strikes someone on the right cheek, it's an back-handed slap. If that person turns the left cheek, the assailant can no longer back-hand. He has to slap open-handed or punch.

    An back-handed slap is a sign that the slapper considers himself the social superior to the slapped. You back-hand servants and slaves. To punch, or open-handed slap, someone is to declare them an equal.

    Jesus is saying, "if someone slaps you, make them punch you. Demand to be treated as an equal." It's a radical message about the social order. It's not about not non-violence.
