  •  I had a lot of issues with LBJ but I have come (7+ / 0-)

to forgive him for some, especially lately.  I think he may have been a better person than I gave him credit for.

    •  Author, David Remnick notes in his book, (5+ / 0-)

The Bridge... that despite being "profoundly affected by his experience as a young man in Cotulla, Texas teaching poor Mexican-American children..." Lyndon Johnson spent

his first twenty years in the House and Senate, from 1937 to 1957, Johnson had voted against all kinds of bills proposing to help blacks, including anti-lynching measures...

He goes on to point out that it wasn't until the mid-fifties that he "allowed himself" to finally begin working for civil rights. It was "Bloody Sunday" and the weakened state of the white supremacists in Congress followed by his defeat of Goldwater in the 1964 election that finally pushed him to introduce and get passed the Civil Rights Act.

Those you love to idolize him and claim he had more courage than Obama would do well to remember that their idol's courage was missing for decades and it took an event like Bloody Sunday to help him find it again.

"Palin tried marijuana years ago. She said it distorted her perceptions & impaired her thinking. She hopes the effects will eventually one day wear off." -
