    based on where the photographer decides to establish the boundaries of the picture when he/she takes it.  A commenter above nailed it when he showed how the picture could have been cropped to show Obama alone without Photoshopping out the other two people.

    This is a diary looking for a problem where this is none.

      The cropped picture is not "just as bad".  In fact, it doesn't seem to imply much of anything.  But that's a red-herring, because cropping is just as bad, when you are purposefully leaving something out that reverses the point you're trying to make. Just because news organizations have always done this because it was the only technology available at the time doesn't make it right. It still turns news into propaganda.
