    another observation here that the photo is question is a cover photo and not part of a journalistic photo spread INSIDE the magazine. There really is a whole different set of guidelines for that. I've probably designed hundreds of covers at this point, and as a designer am given free rein to do whatever is necessary to that photo to make a spiffy looking cover. BUT when adjusting photos for editorial use there are very strict rules: no "flipping", no removing warts, zits, dirt, etc. However, we consider it fine to remove irrelevant background stuff, like a light fixture that looks as if it's growing out of someone's head, etc... basically anything that would render the photo either confusing or comical. But these alterations are always carefully discussed with the editor first.
