  •  Gasland is an eye-opener, but (15+ / 0-)

    the worst part of it:

toxic chemicals being left in ground water, high levels of methane gas being released at condensation stations and people with flames coming out of their water faucets, natural gas is already sounding a little scary as the answer

is that this is not a necessary component of gas recovery. Hydraulic fracking, in which large quantities of toxic chemicals are injected at high pressure into the reservoir, is to natural gas drilling as mountaintop removal is to coal mining. It is faster and makes the perps a little more money and for that incremental gain they are willing to trash the environment and destroy ecosystems. After all, they don't live there.

The primary reason they have been able to establish fracking wells on people's property is they point to non-frack gas wells, which are relatively safe and non-damaging, without telling the property owners that this is not the process they will be using on their property. So the owners sell the mineral rights, thinking their land won't be trashed, and wind up with flammable water coming out of their taps.
