    would have shown Sciblogs that there are already best practices for this type of thing for general advertising posts on blogs. Looking at the timeline I get the impression that they did in fact research  this - between emails. Their final version is basically the web standard for taking advertorials on blogs i.e. complete transparency with opt out options for the reader.

      seriously misjudged the reaction, both internally and externally. #Scienceblogs was an active tag most of the day on Twitter and it was not pretty.

      I suspect that in the original discussions, and with the first drafts of Pepsi's page, they felt it would be obvious to the readers that this was a sponsored page, and not independent science.  Alas, they overlooked how picky scientists rightfully are about propaganda of any form masquerading as science.
