    Why it wasn't bigger sooner is the question.

    The answer: Coal and Oil were too cheap for too long.

    Boise was a pioneer in geothermal heating.

    Geothermal power was quite competitive in California in the 60's with fossil fuels when Saudi Light sold for maybe $5 a barrel.

    Why was progress halted?

    The usual.  Inertia, monopolies, superstition, regulators, etc.

    Geothermal heating has been used for at least 10,000 years.
