  •  Actually.... (18+ / 0-)

I would have to agree with the 20% or so.  John Dean talks about authoritarians, and they comprise about 23% of the population.

These are people who want to be told what to do.  They want to have a father figure tell them how to run their lives, and absolve them of any responsibility for their own actions.

    It's scary... but it's true.

    •  And above all (9+ / 0-)

The want their bigoted world view confirmed. This is true of the entire RW mindset. Their opinions are not based on facts, they're based on what they want to believe, as twisted as those beliefs are. They are entirely emotion based.

When RW gasbags accuse Liberals of being "emotional", it is one of the greatest examples of RW projection there is.

    •  I've no hard figures, but 23% seems Very (3+ / 0-)

conservative. Monotheists, polytheists, all must have this higher power entity(s) that establish rules that we must adhere to.

Full disclosure: i believe in rules, but they aren't "established" by some "higher entity", they just ARE. Like gravity holds you to the sidewalk but EMF keeps you from falling through the sidewalk, but i won't go to any "hell" if i figure out how to break those rules (although the core is said to be rather warm).

    •  great! let's co-opt them! (0+ / 0-)

If 25% of the people like being told what to do, then let's assume it doesn't matter who's telling them what to do, and co-opt them to our side!

We can give them plenty of things to do where they'll be following instructions from some kind of chain of command.

      Neighborhood watches.

      Urban clean-ups on weekends.

After-school tutoring of students who need it.

      Rural wildland fire mitigation.

Work crews to install insulation in the houses of elders and poor folks.

Plenty of places they can help out and be told what to do.  But while they're doing that, we can encourage them to think for themselves.
