in religion, it's totally emotional. Any logic or reason used in religious discussion is folded, spindled and mutilated by the emotional component. You cannot engage in true critical thinking for very long if you have some religious component that is going to predetermine an answer or outcome. They are, by their nature, mutually exclusive thought processes.

Having said that, i wouldn't want to abolish religion in any foreseeable time frame. There are just too many people out here who couldn't handle total self regulation without it.

Logic and emotions are not mutually exclusive.

And I've spindled many a punched card.

This is an illogical argument. Is it an emotional argument then? Nope.

      •  I'm not saying you can't apply logic to emotion.. (1+ / 0-)

Just, that if you do, you're going to get an emotional outcome not a logical one. You'll get the same or slightly modified "belief" that you started out with.

based in belief of their religious texts or leaders and what they are told is are the rules, what is right and wrong etc.

You hear people say (for example) that marriage equality will destroy the 'traditional' family. But when asked how they rarely have any answer but to repeat their claim, saying something like 'you erode the value of marriage' or something similar.

I am not sure this is all emotion, we have emotion on our side too.  I think there are simply different personality types that tend to be more followers of authority figures (God included I suppose) who just cannot bear being told their leaders are wrong.

on both sides. There are leaders and followers, predators and prey.
