    many, many stories about escaped octopuses going into adjacent tanks and returning, but it's never happened.

      An octopus in the UK grew bored and discovered that he could shut off the light in his room by climbing out of his tank and shooting a jet of water at it, causing a short circuit (it took the aquarium three days, including a stakeout, to figure out what was going on).  He also started various other mischief for entertainment, including juggling the other occupants of the tank, picking up stones and throwing them against the glass (damaging it), and periodically rearranging the tank (much to the consternation of the tank's other occupants).  The keepers noted that they need to give him more toys to play with during the aquarium's' winter closure to keep him busy.

      These are very intelligent animals.
