Very good diary, Ken. I am perplexed by the union-bashing and teacher-bashing that goes on here but the media has had a hand in this for years.
Teachers, police, fire-fighters are the last big unions serving the public, and our salaries and pensions are looked at with jealousy by those who are non-union. Those who are fighting us believe we are lazy and over-compensated and don't forget we teachers have summers off. ;) To read their words, the schools are filled with "bad" teachers. I want to know who these teachers are, because in all my 18 years of teaching I have known perhaps one teacher who really needed to go.
I am a coal miner's granddaughter. At one time my grandfather worked for a non-union mine, and he walked out in fear of his life, only to return to mining after they were all unionized. Many forget the bloodshed during the early years of the unions. All workers benefited from unionization.
I am a proud and grateful union member and I wish all workers could have the same protections that I have been afforded.
Glad you wrote this, have a good weekend...brought to us by our unions many years ago.

Think what you are doing today. -Fred Rogers
