other officer positions in our local teacher's union, I understand its importance. The administration of all schools at times falls into the power game. If you have read Lakeoff, it is close to the stern parent model. For some reason, once they get that degree, they believe they know how to educate better. When teachers like me question their knowledge and ask for proof, we are considered trouble makers.

Yet, the protection of the union protects my position and helps me protect others. That protection is good for education.

Bad teachers should be fired. Everyone knows that. Administrators usually are not willing to fire people for three reasons:

    1. They have to document the ineffectiveness of the teacher.
    1. They have to go to a public hearing demonstrating their evidence.
    1. The average administrator who fires a teacher can expect to be fired within two years.

Even in states where there is no tenure like Georgia, teachers rarely get fired. Since it happens in states where unions have no power, it seems likely that the problem does not exist with the union.

I am one of those who speak up, always for what is best for the kids, but suffer retaliation by administrators. I have been transferred to the most difficult schools because of asking the wrong questions or asking for reasoning behind decisions made by the district. But I know getting fired is not something I need to truely fear as I am union backed. I do my job well and am very good with my students.
