    for diaries to make the recommended list that they had to be informative as well as interesting and that their authors needed to work with a mentor as a journalist works with an editor in order to be what amounts to being certified or licensed to report the news accurately as well as immediately.

    In other words we could begin to have standards of excellence that would be required to be met by people who wanted to make money by their writing.

      but for most of these sites it's eyeballs that matter, and clicks, not substance.

      And I don't mean to imply that's wrong--it's fine for them to get advertisers to pay for a site using page views or clicks. But it's an inherent disconnect in the system.  The more outrageous can mean the more eyeballs.  Quality and fact are nearly irrelevant then.
