Sure it's a very red state, but it's also a state with one of the lowest voter turnouts in the country.  OFA and the Dems are going all out with GOTV, the hard right Republican nominee is scaring some people, and recent events could give us a chance to mobilize the Hispanic vote.  We also have a great candidate for Governor in Salt Lake County Mayor, Peter Corroon (Howard Dean's cousin), which will likely help Dem turnout.  Sam is a great guy.  He needs some help with media skills, but his down home humble style (which is authentic btw) contrasted with the slick lawyer style of his opponent could help him in rural areas. Dem GOTV and enough money could make this a real contest.  You really don't want the other guy in the Senate.  He's as wingnutty as Sharon Angle or Rand Paul, but smarter and better at hiding it.

Thanks for the comment. It'd be great to see the Tea Party mess up the Utah seat for Republicans.

I do recall that Obama won a few counties in Utah against McCain, including close to break even in Salt Lake City County.

I watched a few videos of Sam Granato. I can see the potential appeal of an unpolished everyman.

First time since 1964 that a Dem won.  Also Grand County and Summit which tend to lean Dem, I can't remember if he won Carbon county.  That county sometimes votes Dem because of the mining unions.  Demographics in Utah are changing and we are hard at work here to take advantage of that.  Utah wasn't always so red.  It was the ERA in the 1970s that really swung things, as the Mormon church threw their weight behind defeating it and supported GOP candidates to do so.  Their big fear?  That it would make Gay marriage possible.   They are still fighting that one, as we all know :(  but we won't let it stop us.
