bomb the shit out of someone and it is hard to know in advance whether they will be accessible by land or by water.  Since the Air Force can't, and wouldn't if they could, fly from carriers, and since you do have to be able to assert air dominance when necessary, you maintain both. Matter of turf wars, which are legendary among the armed forces, not just ours. Good luck ending them.

    Cheers

Why we shouldn't have a standalone air force. Navy air personnel are capable of take-off and landing on both land and sea. Air force personnel are only capable of take-off and landing on land. We can fund the more flexible of the two, and let the less flexible one either be subsumed or shut down entirely.

there was no autonomous Air Force and, as you say, nowadays there seems to be no real need for it. However I predict the proverbial snow fall in hell if you manage to subsume the Air Force into the other two Forces.

Indeed, I'd be surprised if we don't soon gain a fourth arm of the Armed Forces, the Space Force, would make us half an octopus. Apologies to Paul, the psychic octopus who of course has foreseen all. (also for the very bad puns)

        Cheers

but there are actually seven. Who knew? With the addition of the Space Force we will have a whole octopus. From the wiki:

            The seven uniformed services are:
            United States Army
            United States Navy
            United States Marine Corps
            United States Air Force
            United States Coast Guard
United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps

            •  Wouldn't the Space Force... (0+ / 0-)

...be a part of the Air Force?

              •  No doubt at first (0+ / 0-)

but in time I would expect it to become an independent branch, much in the same way that the Air Force broke off from the Army.
