    His recounting of the epiphany he had when he got his first paying job after escaping to freedom, meager though it might have been, always brings tears to my eyes. The realization that he had at least a little bit of agency - that his labors were, from that moment forward, going to benefit him and not a slaveholder has an incredible emotional impact.

    Am I foolish to answer Frederick Douglass when asked to name the greatest American writer?
