so I don't understand how your sidetrack really relates and I also, remember Obama as one of the folks making hay of the death panels.

    •  I don't think it's a sidetrack. (4+ / 0-)

It an example of Obama NOT "taking it to the Cheney/Bush neocons and their teabagging enablers."

It'd be a sidetrack to debate whether Gates is or isn't a bad secretary of defense. He's not "change we can believe in," he represents continuity with all of Bush's war policies and, as I said, his appointment reinforces the meme that there is no Democrat up to the job. I think it's counterproductive to cede national security to the Repukes like that.

Better, if Obama wanted a bipartisan cabinet, to put a Repuke in one of the other senior positions rather than undermine the Democrats' national security cred.

Gates himself is very much a mainstream, military-industrial complex figure. As such, he's not WORSE than average. And I'd agree, he's not that bad, for a mainstream, military-industrial complex figure.

Obama let things get way out of hand in August. And no, he didn't call people out for the "death panels" BS. Not much, anyway. He didn't come down hard on Grassley when he said there was a good question about wether there were death panels. He kept acting as if Grassley was part of the bipartisan team. He also caved in to that guy who shouted "You lie" during the State of the Union.

Dump Obama: So immoral and unethical that he ignores his legal obligation to prosecute people who tortured prisoners to death. Good at photo ops, though.

LOWERING the military budget. Hasn't there been an opposite party Secretary before? He was married to a newscaster from Boston. (My memory never has the fact i need filed correctly.)

But he is for permanent war in terms of smaller U.S. forces going wherever our "vital interests" are threatened--and since he is a believer in the GWOT, well, you do the math. He is totally for the COIN approach, and if you think that countering radical Islamist terrorism requires a militarized approach (I don't), well, COIN+GWOT=permanent war. That's Gates.

That's continuity, not change I can believe in.

            •  If you believe that Obama should be (0+ / 0-)

dumped, perhaps another site would suit you better. The situation is changing. If you read the Alter book, it describes how he made his decisions about the wars, and how he ordered the Generals to make it happen.

Um, do you have a link to either Bush or Obamas' schedule?

As for whether another site would suit me better, I have news for you. This purpose of this site is not to worship Obama. Perhaps you should go start your own Obama cult site instead.

        Or something.

Obama seeks increase in Defense spending
        By Megan ScullyCongressDailyFebruary 1, 2010
The Obama administration Monday requested a $708.2 billion defense budget for fiscal 2011, plus an additional $33 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for the remainder of the fiscal year.
For fiscal 2011, the request includes $548.9 billion for the Defense Department's base budget -- an $18.2 billion, or 3.4 percent increase, over fiscal 2010 enacted levels -- as well as $159.3 billion to pay for the wars.

        Source.
That took about five seconds. Rest assured, The U.S. will continue to spend more on defense than the rest of the world combined.

Just look at aircraft carriers. The U.S. has 11 -- ELEVEN -- active aircraft carrier battle groups, one aircraft carrier in reserve and three more under construction. Please do not insult my intelligence by talking about proposed defense cuts.

Yes, there have been opposite-party defense secretaries, all Republicans appointed by Democratic presidents.  I'm not saying Obama is the first to do it, I'm saying it reinforces a false, damaging meme.
