      I'm in a merit-based profession where looks don't matter and it's impossible to cheat. If you can't play the piano, you can't play the piano. I suppose if you're playing someone's wedding you need to look the part.
      And children can see right through any veneer. Perhaps the only appearance-related advantage are kind eyes and a ready smile.

      I had a long conversation with my neighbor today. He has been in the corporate world, computer engineering, for (58-22) years and is now caught in some dreadful office politics and may be forced out at this late stage in his career.

      I have been fantasizing about finding a more stable job (read:benefits) but after talking to him I doubt that I have the guile to operate in such an atmosphere, or maybe it's that I don't want to attempt to develop it.
