survey is probably true in general, but a woman or man with talent and drive can still clean up.

    •  The only thing I got to clean up (5+ / 0-)

for all my talent and drive was my desk when I was fired for being too competent.  My boss told me he was going to replace me with someone who wasn't as smart as me.

      •  Yep, good look'n and dumb ........... (0+ / 0-)

It's not just for TV anchors anymore.

Just appearing to be smarter than the boss will attract the ax. God help you if it's actually proven.

        •  It's why I'm unemployed NOW (5+ / 0-)

I had two strikes against me.

          1. I was more attractive than my supervisor.  Though I'm not at my ideal weight, I know how to dress and look like a professional career woman, whether I am a admin/clerical or policy analyst.
          1.  My supervisor had no previous Federal Government experience and no degree higher than a Bachelor's Degree.  I have a BA in Political Science; a Master's in Public Administration, and am now a PhD candidate in Public Policy.

Got laid off with a few others within six months, and the ones retained were the employees I TRAINED.

Been job hunting for over a year.  Screw these dipshyts who would rather hire incompetent eye candy as opposed to hiring competent employees who don't look like Angelina Jolie.

    •  You're aware, aren't you (0+ / 0-)

That Gates' father and grandfather are/were both millionaires? His talent wouldn't have put him where he is if it weren't for the resources he had access to because of his family. Gates, for example, compensates for his poor social skills by hiring the right people to use social skills on his behalf, not by being so technically brilliant that his poor social skills don't matter.

Gates is about the worst example of a self-made man you can use. You can certainly credit him for choosing not to behave like a stereotypical trust-fund kid, but to say that his talent was a sufficient condition for his success is to have tunnel vision.
