campaign contributions are a form of protected speech.  The SCOTUS has established this repeatedly.

This is why key provisions of McCain-Feingold are being struck down.  You can not not limit people's ability to support their chosen issues, positions, candidates and propositions by campaigning, volunteering, broadcasting, funding, etc.   You would also need to change the interpretation of the 14th amendment to stop this from granting these rights to corporations.

Also "lobbyist" is vaguely defined.  In DC Law Firms, there are no "lobbyists".  They are "Government Affairs Consultants" or "Legislative Specialists" etc.

You also can't pass a law about what people can or can not do for a living.  You can put limited-time restrictions like non-compete clauses and the like, but any LIFETIME BAN would be struck down in court very quickly.

I'd love to see public financed elections and I would love to see the earmark process improved if not eliminated so you have my support but some of these "laws" you are proposing wouldn't last.

    •  Remember this is what passes for innovation (0+ / 0-)

in the State of Illinois where corruption has has finally ground our governmental machinery down to nearly complete ineffectiveness.  Alexi's points are wishful thinking given SCOTUS and the huge loophole work arounds you mention.  Please note Alexi has done a no federal lobbyists can contribute to my campaign shtick but he is accepting money from state lobbyists - given that he is Illinois Treasurer that does not not smell right.  You give Alexi the benefit of the doubt - I think it is window dressing.

    •  The laws would have to be carefully & narrowly (0+ / 0-)

      written--it could be done.
