I am afraid of supporting him because his staff has shown me a very ugly picture of what happens to his supporters that get singled out by the tea party brewers.

They get apologized to and get offered promotions. Vilsack screwed up, he admitted it and apologized.

Please name for me the last 6 or 4 or 2 Presidents where something like this occurred--everybody publically acknowledging their error and attempting to make it right. This is the only President that I can recall doing this. You may know of others, but I don't.

In the face of a screw up that they acknowledged and fixed, at what point to they get cut some slack? Never?

I am asking this honestly. Is it the case that you never want them to screw up? Or for them not to make restitution when they do screw up? Or what is that you realistically want from an institution run by humans.

that the diarist feels a bit self-important, concerned about being also singled out by the TP:

      Don't believe everything you think.

Van Jones, ACORN and many others were smeared too, and the administration / Democrats sided with the smears.

Even after it has been extensively proven that ACORN was smeared and did not commit a crime, nothing was done to rebuild it.

      •  Let's review this pattern of capitulation (1+ / 0-)

ACORN was an organization that did themselves no favor by registering "Mickey Mouse" to vote.

Van Jones did himself no favors by saying by signing a 9/11 truther petition. You can't even post a 9/11 truther diary at the most progressivey progressivist Daily Kos and not get banned. But Van Jones was supposed to get a pass in a U.S. Government-appointed position for signing a petition that intimated U.S. involvement in 9/11?

When Rev. Jeremiah Wright was on endless loop on national television, did Obama throw him under a bus, as has been repeated ad nauseum lately on Daily Kos.

No he did not, even though friend and foe alike pleaded for him to and he was losing to Hillary because of it.

Instead he did the Race Speech in which he explicitly did not throw Wright under the bus.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother - a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.

It was only after Wright did his final act with the Press Club, where he was spewing eugenics theories that Obama finally cut him loose, for good.

That is why the Race Speech got so much press. He did not cut him loose at the first sign of trouble. That was politically unheard of in the middle of a campaign.

Now we have the Shirley Sherrod event. Vilsack fired her summarily.

The President is involved in more pressing matters of state than the hirings and firings of every one of his departmental managers.

Vilsack read a transcript of an edited video and fired her. The NAACP, who invited her to the event and owned the tape that was edited, condemned her, yet somehow Obama fired and condemned her?

It is better for him to do what he does: hire people that he thinks are capable, give them the authority to do their job without second-guessing and when they screw up, make them fix it?

Yet ACORN getting a temp making a mistake and registering Mickey Mouse is grounds for destroying ACORN ?

If you look on my earlier diaries, you might find a few about 9/11. I was never a truther but did mention LIHOP - which I can not believe - on a recommended diary. Was part of the dialog in 2004 and early 2005. so was election fraud. 9/11 truthers got banned around 2006 iirc.

Van Jones signed that document when ? In what context ? There were a lot of unexplained things about 9/11 we even got a Congressional Inquiry on it.

Making people fix things when they screw up is fine. Except Van Jones, ACORN, Sherrod got no chance to fix anything.

To make mistakes is human. But to keep on doing the same mistake over and over is not smart. And when it endangers people who work for you or who publicly support you, then is time to stop and fix it for good. It's way past time Obama's administration learns to not enable the Right Wing smear machine.

PS: On truther lingo LIHOP means Bush's team Let It Happen On Purpose, while MIHOP means they made it happen. I could never believe either of those but do think there are a lot of lose threads on that Congressional Report.

especially of the Rev. Wright situation. Pres. Obama really tried not to denounce the man but in the end he had no choice.  That Press Club appearance was so out of bounds that I thought he did that shit on purpose so Pres. Obama could finally cut the cord. Seriously, I thought he fell on his sword for Obama he was so bad.

And Jonathan Alter was on Rachel tonight and made some good points about Van Jones (along the lines that you made). Alter said they messed up in this case but it's not that comparable to previous situations.  He also stated that the WH needs to find stronger surrogates in the DNC to fight the smears.  He said Obama should not be in the dirt with these people when he's got real work to do (he seemed to convince Rachel of this, who had initially thought otherwise).

Sherrod's case stands on its own in my mind. It's baffling to me because I do not think Pres. Obama is afraid of the GOP or right-wing media at all. I've never gotten that impression.  Instead, I just don't think he or his administration has found the right approach in dealing with them or the media.  So, I just can't figure out why the extreme freak out initially. I'd like to know who in the WH freaked out so badly?  Rahm? lol Axelrod?
