that getting outside the detention facility, and earning wages no matter how small, even among stinking toxins without adequate protective gear ... is something that looks good to enough inmates, to where they have no shortage of volunteers for it.

    •  In other words, I doubt the conclusion (0+ / 0-)

of many here that the convict laborers are necessarily compelled participate.  But I'd prefer to see BP compelled to spend a lot more on employing displaced civilians.

but the prisons are in there right away.

Some official with the prison system is dying to find a way to get his/her prisoners any type of job experience so the minute the spill happened I know they were on the phone with someone at BP.

This isn't something BP initiated, they have the money.  The prisons are looking for ways to help the people inside be better prepared for the outside and this is one of the many ways they can do it.

We have monthly meetings with prisons here in MN trying to do the same thing.

It's so intense....what does this mean?

I promise that someone is helping them build a resume with this exact job on it and they will be able to tell people when they get out of prison that they helped to clean up the oil spill so, people that wouldn't even think about hiring them could enjoy their beaches once again.
