    paid a wage that does not undercut wages of people who are outside prison. The money could be saved and given to them when they leave to give them something to start over with; forcing people to work in this way does nothing but take away their rights as human beings and forces them to the level of a slave. Just because you have committed a crime does not mean that you lose your rights as a human being, you certainly lose some of your civil rights, but your human rights can not be taken away.

    I do not and cannot accept the argument that this is a way of paying back a debt to society; prisons should be placing of rehabilitation, this seems to have been abandoned in parts of the american prison system which seems to rely on punishment and incarceration as a way to deal with people who have committed crimes.

    No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable (Adam Smith, 1776, I, p. 96).
