"It is really galling to people that three companies in the U.S. got a billion dollars," he said in an appearance with his opponent, Democratic nominee Jack Conway, at Farm Bureau headquarters in Louisville.

But, in fact, the "companies" are all cooperatives that are owned by thousands of farmers.

Paul's spokesperson Jesse Benton confirmed their institutional ignorance:

    I don't know what a co-op is.

So what did Conway say about co-ops, and the $4100 a year each farmer got from that $1B? Joseph Gerth's article says nothing about Conway's response, which is the essential point of the story - along with the audience's reaction to it.

    The article does say:

Conway, Kentucky's attorney general, twice claimed erroneously that Paul had called for doing away with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"Dr. Paul stated unequivocally to The Courier-Journal on May 8 that he favors abolishing the USDA," Conway said after Paul denied that he had ever made such a statement.

In fact, Paul has said it's not feasible to abolish the department. Instead, he has advocated getting rid of individual programs in the department that aren't effective or cost-efficient.

But you can see that Conway did not claim that Paul had called for doing away with the Agriculture Department. He said that Paul favors abolishing it. Paul does say that it's not feasible to abolish it, so he'd get rid of individual programs. But he clearly does favor abolishing it; he just thinks it's not feasible to do it that way.

So I can't tell whether it's just Gerth's deficient reporting, or whether Conway didn't respond by whacking the pinata Paul floated at a farmer's convention about deleting subsidies to farmers. But seeing the quality of political discourse in Kentucky, it's probably both.
