I have, well I don't know what kind of question, I'll guess philosophical, but it is a bit more profound than I usually see.  It involves what I dub "progression uncertainty."

For example, I have a wonderful son with a women I am no longer married to.  His mother kind of turned psycho towards me, exposing a rabid authoritarian trait.  Hence the no longer married part.

But if I hadn't gone through it, I wouldn't have my son whom I would never want to not have.  Especially since he just graduated from college, I need a return on my investment :)  There was much pain and humiliation, and lying, so much lying.  Yet I'd never want to undo it, the consequences are worse than the original pain.

So the question is, had there been no slavery, as despicable and humiliating as that was, is there any certainty that all slaves would have been better off if it didn't happen?  Is there any certainty the slave traders would have been worse off?

Not knowing where people were taken from, based on the 2010 map of Africa, I would speculate some origins would be in horrible conditions now, like say Mogadishu, Somalia.  Charles Taylor was not a good person from what I've read.

On the other hand, South Africa, having been through a different form of repression in Apartheid, society seems a not so bad place for all now, at least superficially.

I have pondered this a lot with no answer because it is so touchy to even bring up.  It's bugged me for many years, and though I resign to getting HR'd to oblivion, if I get some reasoned responses, thank you in advance.

    Peace.

wish to pursue in your life?

"So the question is, had there been no slavery, as despicable and humiliating as that was, is there any certainty that all slaves would have been better off if it didn't happen?  Is there any certainty the slave traders would have been worse off?"

Why are these important to you?  Because to me they sound like a complete waste of time.  Any serious answer is only speculative guesswork and there is no way to comprehend the benefits vs. pain ratio of millions of people as if they were sitting in some warehouse waiting to be accounted for.

Think about your son, how much you love him.  Then go read a book that evokes lives of slaves - such as Judge Higginbotham's book.  Try if you can to picture yourself with your son on an auction block.  You are bought and going about 200 miles south.  Your son is sold to a different owner and will be going 400 miles west into a different state.

      You'll never see him again.

And it isn't because of some random evil.  It is because you are property. And the centuries old laws that regulate society protect the men who own you and your son.  They don't regard you as anything more than a commodity.

I wonder about things I expect others don't.

I expect you wonder about things I don't, etc, etc.

I am  extremely offended by your commentary. So much so, that I will make a mental note to skip any other contributions you make to any thread.

          Note to the diarist.
If you don't believe in the concept of reverse racism, why post the diary?  Read Tim Wise or google to find a wealth of information on this subject. Then you can pose questions that lead to meaningful discussions about race relations in America.

to discuss the Reverse Racism. Just because I don't believe in the concept doesn't mean I can't discuss it with people who do, and people who don't like me. To gain more knowledge and more of an understanding to the community I post in.

I mentioned Tim Wise in my diary, I've read some of his works.

One thing I didn't know before posting this diary, is that Reverse Racism was created by the Conservative Movement, and is now mostly a right wing meme.

I wonder how white Americans can be so blind every day in how African Americans continue to be poorly treated in this society.  I also wonder why some seem to look for any kind of diversion to avoid seriously looking at these problems that effect millions of people NOW.

Is one of those questions that is so racistly offensive for anyone to even THINK, let along ask, that it should be the equivalent of Godwin.

This is like saying the holocaust was a good thing because it led to the founding of Israel as a Jewish state.
