    Don't for one minute think that I'm saying "all whites" owe "all African-Americans" something for slavery.  I don't.

    However, it is very obvious to me that white males continue to enjoy a great deal of preferential treatment in our society, "white privilege" if you will.  There are many well executed studies that show in many spheres of life African Americans are discriminated against and that progress has not been nearly as fast as many whites believe.

    A white American with a healthy degree of empathy for his fellow citizens is going to feel a bit guilty about the preferential treatment he gets due to a superficial draw of DNA cards.

    And feeling guilty has a healthy, psychological purpose.  It motivates people to repair their relationships to each other and attempt to treat each other in more fair ways.
