  •  Wouldn't that fall under... (5+ / 0-)

...always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction?

Well, not necessarily safe for what you intend to shoot at, but to keep it from being pointed at anything unintended, at any rate.

    •  This rule would apply to the action of aiming and (5+ / 0-)

then preparing to shoot.  For example I could have a deer in my crosshairs with hillside behind him, looking through the scope I notice a patch of brown that might another deer behind him.  I would wait for the deer in my sights to move or confirm that what I am seeing is not another animal.

This safety rule is one of Col. Jeff Cooper's.

You are correct that even leveling a gun on a target without knowing what is behind it - road, field with grazing livestock, house, barn, etc. - is pointing the barrel in an unsafe direction.

      •  This does come back... (5+ / 0-) why I had hoped KV would write this diary -- not only does he know the safety rules, he knows how to teach them.

Your point is completely accurate and valid, but it's not something I would think to point out beyond saying you should always keep the gun pointed somewhere safe.  In other words, I've got the rules so internalized that of course I know that's all important, but I might not think of separating it out into different rules.

There's a big difference in knowing something and being able to explain it.

        •  If you adhere to the three basic rules........... (5+ / 0-)

nobody is going to get hurt.  KV is a good teacher.  I think diary is a good place to discuss some basic safety rules that build on this foundation.  Safety is about what's between your ears and the more you know the better you should be able to keep safe.   The rule I mention above is a big part of hunters'ed.  When I helped teach the class we would emphasize that the environment around you is constantly changing and you must be aware of this and take appropriate precautions.  I'm sure Col. Cooper was thinking more of a combat scenario.
