Gee, I thought it would be obvious that I'm talking about the Southern culture of entitlement and rage against Yankee tyranny, not Whites with any sense of common humanity. Let me recommend To Kill a Mockingbird, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (book), Fried Green Tomatoes (movie), Dead Weight, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the original movie In the Heat of the Night and also the TV show, Buck and the Preacher...Feel free to add to this list.

    •  Curious, your recommended reading is fiction... (0+ / 0-)

...okay, "based on a true story", some of it...same with the movies and teevee...

      Just saying, and all.

who are the White civil rights leaders from the South?

OK, Abraham Lincoln was from Kentucky, originally, he wrote some fine speeches.

Jimmy Carter from Georgia, hasn't written much about American racism, but did call out Israel on the Apartheid wall.

There are a number of historians from the South who are breaking down the myths. Shelby Foote is good.

        •  I invite you to do your own research... (0+ / 0-)

          ...and synthesis, you seem capable.

If you're taking suggestions, I'd advocate for an undertaking that explores beyond fictional accounts and novels as sources of putative fact, however finely wrought that fiction may be.

Surely there is more clarity that you could achieve beyond this admirable essay.

          •  I'm not basing my analysis on fiction (0+ / 0-)

I'm pointing out the Southern writers who were opposed to racism, gay-bashing, and so on. With the idea that you would be able to tell that I appreciate what is good in the South.
