while clutching a different holy book with the other. That's religion for you. Since nobody has any good arguments to make for their position, nobody should really be surprised at all the bickering, name-calling, book-burning, and violence done between subscribers of competing religious beliefs, especially those religions which say you deserve to be tortured for eternity if you reject it (e.g. fundamentalist Christianity, most forms of Islam).

    •  Just to follow up, is it really wrong to burn it? (3+ / 0-)

I mean, these people no doubt sincerely believe that all Muslims deserve to be tortured for eternity. If I believed there was a book so bad that you deserve to be tortured for eternity just because you believe it, well, I wouldn't burn it because that wouldn't convince anybody, but I certainly wouldn't consider it unethical to burn that book.

If we're going to preach the mantra of religious tolerance, then we have to respect the beliefs of the book-burners who think all Muslims are scourges who deserve to be tortured for eternity, as well as the beliefs of Muslims who think likewise about Christians. The problem isn't the book burning, it's the hateful religious belief that eternal torture is an acceptable form of punishment to those who don't agree with you.

Yes, let's be respectful of religious people, but we don't have to be respectful of every religious belief. If a religion is saying that its competitors deserve torture, then that religion is unethical, those who believe it are taking an unethical stance, and it should be okay to say so in public.

""We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell,"

They can`t have it both ways, or are these nut jobs complaining about Islamists taking their spot in hell, or is hell just really really overcrowded.

I`m already against the next war.
