    You just said it yourself!  And I quote you, "he does oppose marriage for gays . . ."  What more do you need to answer your own question?

    A "civil union," or any other form of union that isn't quite marriage is NOT marriage, is not equal to marriage, and is not acceptable under the law, per Judge Walker.  The judge demolishes the incorrect argument that near-marriage is the same thing as marriage in his ruling, which you should read.  If I remember correctly, it's in the "Conclusions of Law" section, around page 100 or 110 of the ruling.  Basically, the logic is (and here I'm paraphrasing), if you've got two social systems, identical except for the fact that certain people are being kept out of one and not kept out of the other, the two systems are ipso facto not equal.  There's more to it than that, but that's the start of it.
