    My point was about mass-produced vehicles that have a 'real' market.

    There's a number of more or less exotic experimental cars with an electric engine. None of them are suited for the big consumer markets because they are either too expensive or too experimental.

    The Volt, on the other hand, is the first real mass market EV (it will soon be followed by Japanese and German competitors) which goes a long way demonstrating the US industry's ability to research and develop really new technologies. When was the last time an American car actually introduced a new technology? Must have been in the 50's...
