  •  I've been an activist in Rhode Island forever (6+ / 0-)

David Segal is the real deal. He needs our support (and that means our money), because he's up against the current mayor of Providence. David Ciciline is considered progessive by some. I can tell you from my years of activist work that he barely even feigns interest in the low income communities of providence. He's a career politician all the way, and he has no vision for the national political stage. He even had teh nerve to tell our members (all 150 of them) that the reason for the rats in their neighborhood wasn't that they had failed to receive their rat proof trash cans. It was because people supposedly threw their food in the street. Blame the people. Classy, Ciciline. David Segal, on the other hand, is a true progressive who began with the green party, left it because it was the only way to achieve statewide office, and since getting there has done amazing things. Do read that Larry Lessig piece linked in teh diary. Great cause, well worth our support.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

It's true that a lot of people think Cicilline is "progressive enough", and I'm sure he'd vote correctly most of the time.  But, as you point out, we can do so much better in a district like this, and we're fortunate to have a candidate in David Segal that is a real visionary and accomplished activist.  If he is able to accomplish in Congress one-tenth of what he has accomplished in Providence, he will be one of the most effective progressives in DC.

His record on affordable housing, one of Rhode Island's biggest problems (especially providence) is nonexistent. He's all show. He doesn't deserve this seat. David Segal has a record of pushing cutting edge progressive legislation and getting things passed.
