    came out of Tammany Hall. He remains probably the best governor of NY State since DeWitt Clinton, who was largely responsible for the Erie Canal. But Smith was not elected to public office until 1903, when another good NY Democrat, Franklin Roosevelt, was still in college.  

    I also probably would have voted for TR over Wilson. We might have gotten national health insurance in 1913 had TR been elected.

      Tammany, and after FDR (an anti-Tammany Democrat) won the White House Smith moved to the right and vigorously opposed the New Deal.
