and their board invited me to lunch where we talked.  I was very surprised that they responded.  (I sent them a letter with an argument rather than a crank email.)  They are sympathetic, and I think, eventually, more and more groups will not give to the BSA for the reasons you mention.  One board member was an atheist whose son was a cub scout--and she was hoping he loses interest before he's old enough to be a scout to prevent the inevitable dismissal.  The county I work in has dropped the BSA from its local version of United Way for the reasons you mention.

I would not give to any charity that turns my cash over to the scouts.

I think the idea of having a club for boys and girls (separate clubs is not a big deal for me) is great. I would love to see the kids in my city get the chance to go camping and such. But I cannot support the Boy Scouts at all.

because they fund the BSA.  As I told their board--groups should be allowed to teach hate--Neo Nazis can teach their children to hate Jews, Klansman can teach their children to hate African Americans, the BSA can teach boys to hate gays and atheists.  That's what it means to live in a republic such as ours.  But then, I will spend my life counteracting that bad education.  And I will not give those groups money to continue their maleducation.
