View Diary: R's 14th Amendment fight NOT about immigration? (45 comments)

    It's certainly "about" immigration for some of them. Most other countries have a law against "anchor babies," but, then again, they don't have the 14th Amendment, either.

    The last time this came up, they were trying to argue that they didn't need to amend to do this. That got laughed off. Now they're going to amend, they think. I wouldn't worry about it too much. There aren't 38 states that will ratify that. It's just a classic GOP wedge issue. They make you deny it and then demagogue.

    And of course, there's a lot of other things that the Cons hate in there too. Might as well repeal it all, right? Since we can't make the damn activist liberal judges make it mean what we want it to.

    (Actually, the 14th Amendment had most of its effect neutered within years of its enactment by The Civil Rights Cases of ironic title.)

    Anyway, sure, it could be about this too. But don't underestimate the immigration part of it.

    And be careful about writing diaries like this or else you might get some angry people claiming you're trying to steal their victory or something.
