    You know the maps where each county is resized according to population?  If these maps were changed to those, it would look even (gasp) worse.  The few areas in the plains where there is still yellow have very few people, and they would barely be visible if the counties were sized according to population.

    A high population state like Florida, that was a sea of almost total yellow and orange and is now largely black, would have even more impact.

    As it is, it is incredible.  To see even an umemployment resistant state like Iowa get overrun by the darkness is frightening.
