Islam -- it just means that there's one more voting block that will vote Democratic in November.

Let's see . . . at this rate, the Republicans will have the white supremacists' vote, the uber-conservative evangelical vote, the Tea Partiers, and -- ????

Should be another landslide for the Democrats.

... your idea has merit. But from a "good and just society" perspective, we should identify and confront radical actors in 'mainstream' America ... including the Tea Party Republicans who would limit the First Amendment Free Exercise Clause to themselves.

I'm just being pragmatic, as there doesn't seem to be any pushback from the fourth estate (see my comment below the Toles/WaPo cartoon) against the Islamophobes, it seems to me that the GOP is doing the Democrats a favor by continuing their hate-campaign against Muslims.

... work together. I don't call for silencing Tea Party Republicans who spout this rubbish, and if we call it out as rubbish they will (I hope) pay for it at the polls. But we must call it out as rubbish, and be prepared to back up our claims.

Studies like this help us present a stronger argument: including and respecting Muslim-Americans works for everyone by giving Muslim-Americans an incentive to identify and resist radicalism. That isn't just a 'nice idea.' There is real-world data to show it works.

more spokespersons from the Democratic Party hit on the First Amendment-trashing by the so-called "patriots" in the GOP/Tea Party, who believe freedom of religion is exclusive to fundamentalist Christians only.

Democrats always win when they take the high moral road in arguments w/the right.  Why the leadership lets itself be led into rhetorically-laden traps set by Frank Luntz and KKKarl Rove, is a mystery to me.

      prolonged unemployment, maybe?

Let's not underestimate the power of the protest vote.

was, the Republicans seem to be shooting themselves in the foot by attacking Muslim Americans, and thereby shrinking the pool of potential voting blocks available to them.

The unemployed are a HUGE voting block and should most definitely not be taken for granted -- one thing's for sure, the Republicans certainly aren't.  They're appealing to every fear and prejudice they can.
