  •  "The 14th amendment was written before..." (4+ / 0-)

    ... we had all this immigration".

    Um, it was written by immigrants, none of whom obtained visas before coming to the colonies.

    And the second amendment was written before we had unmedicated, acutely symptomatic schizophrenics carrying around enough firepower to exterminate an entire elementary school.

    Are the republicans really, really, REALLY sure they want to go down this "it was written before....." line of argument?

    •  In the case of Islam and the 1st Amendment ... (5+ / 0-)

      ... "it was written before" is not even a valid argument. The Framers were well aware of Islam at the time of the Constitutional Convention. In 1776, John Adams praised Mohamed as a "sober inquirer after truth" in his Thoughts on Government. In his 1791 autobiography, Benjamin Franklin applauded religious pluralism in the US., noting that "even if the Mufti of Constantinople were to send a missionary to preach Mohammedanism to us, he would find a pulpit at his service."

      The "they didn't know about Islam back then" argument is false as a matter of fact.

      Good afternoon! ::hugggggs::

        I think Boehner's comments were pointed more at immigration - which makes the self-negating nature of his epic logic fail even more spectacular.

        These idiotic notions are nothing more than a diversion:

        Reporter: "Rep. Boehner, how will you offset the increased deficit with the tax breaks you're advocating?"

        Rep. Boehner: "SCARY BROWN PEOPLE! BEHIND YOU! RUN!"
