    the yarn twists in one direction as the flywheel spins the flyer (the part of the spinning wheel that actually twists the yarn).
    If you take 2 feet of yarn that has been spun, attach a weight to the middle and then hold the 2 ends together (so you have a 1-foot stretch of double yarn with a weight at the bottom to keep the yarn stretched and straight), the twist in the original length will spin the 2 parts in the other direction until the 2 parts are twisted together (in the opposite direction of the original twist) -- so there is energy stored in the original twist of the yarn.
    That is basically how you turn a one-strand twisted length of yarn (called "singles") into a 2 strand twisted together length of yarn (it's called plying) which is stronger than the singles.  
    Of course, wool twisted in one direction doesn't store enough energy to run anything except its own self!
