    The other guys (the baddies) do it. We don't.

    Ditto for religion. Mormonism is seen as outside the fold of Christianity. So the media feels free to criticize it, as if it were Islam or Socialism or any of the other concepts deemed 'foreign' enough to leave them vulnerable to attack.

    The media protects those concepts and identities that it agrees with. Whether that is free-market capitalism, globalization or Christianity, being inside their ideological fold means being safe from criticism.

    While the Catholic Church sits inside that fold, Mormons do not.
