    president. Inevitably, there will be a Republican president wouldn't do that. That's why I'd prefer some action to extend SS solvency now rather than later, and there are ways to extend solvency without cutting benefits; i.e., reducing payments or raising age eligibility.

        Cutting benefits certainly gets talked about most in the media and the blogs. What frustrates me is that no coverage is given to the fiscal commission's discussion on defense budget cuts. Senator Coburn is on the commission task force that looks at defense department cuts, and Coburn's web page has a link to Coburn's letter to the commission about the defense budget.

        Other than mention of freezing military pay, there has been very little coverage of the rest of Coburn's list of needed change. If I understood the Defense budget better, I'd write about it -- and maybe that's the problem -- that few people who understand the budget really want to cut it. Which makes Coburn's proposal for a full audit of the Pentagon even more urgent.

        I didn't think I'd ever agree with Coburn on anything. ;)
