Take the Roadmap for America’s Future offered by Representative Paul D. Ryan  of Wisconsin, the ranking Budget Committee Republican, who calls for major, politically risky changes in Social Security and Medicare. Ask Republicans in competitive races about it, and watch them duck.

"I haven’t read Paul’s road map," said former Representative Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Mr. Sestak’s Republican opponent.

"I support some of what Paul Ryan has suggested, not all of it," said Linda E. McMahon, Mr. Blumenthal’s Republican foe for the Connecticut Senate seat. "One of the things we have to do is protect our senior citizens."

State Senator Robert Hurt of Virginia, the Republican challenger to Representative Tom Perriello, a Democrat, in Virginia’s Fifth House District, agreed. "I do not support it as it’s introduced," Mr. Hurt said. "I would not support cutting benefits for Social Security."
